CHANDLER GIVENS is Of Counsel at Edelson PC, where he investigates and litigates consumer fraud cases, particularly in privacy and emerging technologies.
Chandler began his career at Edelson PC, helping establish the firm’s technical investigations group and litigating many early high-profile data privacy cases. He then co-founded and led a data privacy software startup in Baltimore for nearly a decade. As CEO, he managed product strategy, fundraising, hiring, and other executive responsibilities. Under his leadership, the startup rapidly expanded to serve hundreds of thousands of users globally and was ultimately acquired by the largest consumer cybersecurity company. Following the acquisition, Chandler served as Head of Consumer Privacy, overseeing a portfolio of privacy software products used by millions worldwide.
He returned to Edelson PC bringing deep industry expertise to the firm’s privacy and technology practice.
- In re Netflix Privacy Litigation, Case No. 5:11-CV-00379 EJD (N.D. Cal. 2013), Netflix was alleged to have retained subscribers’ personally identifiable information (PII) and viewing histories beyond the necessary period under the VPPA.
- Dunstan, et al. v. comScore, Inc., No. 11-cv-5807 (N.D. Ill.), groundbreaking lawsuit which at the time was the largest adversarial class to be certified in a privacy case in the history of US jurisprudence.
- Involved in investigating and litigating various cases involving the unlawful collection of consumer data under federal and state statute equivalents, such as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), Stored Communications Act (SCA), and Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA).
- Co-author of two granted patents:
- “Method and system for obfuscating the properties of a web browser,” WO US WO2016149237A1.
- “Method and system for detecting and alerting users of device fingerprinting attempts,” US US10313127B1.
- Adjunct Faculty, Towson University Dept. of Computer and Information Sciences.
- Frequent guest lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, Cyberspace and the Law course.
- Board Observer and or advisor to numerous startups.
- Previous mentor for startups at Conscious Business Ventures, Techstars, and the UMBC Launchpad accelerator.
